Hello friends
It’s my turn on the Make it Modern blog tour, hosted by Riley Blake Designs. It has been a pleasure being part of this this year and seeing the extraordinary talent in the global handmade community.
I decided to end 2021 on a big fun note this ombré string quilt. I have never made a string quilt before, mainly because the tutorials I found never appealed to me in any way. But then I found this one by Cluck Cluck Sew and it was go time!
I had so many ideas regarding colors and fabrics for this quilt but in the end a big beachy themed throw won out. It was a tempting time though – Riley Blake has an enormous basics collection! In the end I picked up my trusty confetti cottons swatch book and picked a whole row. It was a bit of a “trust the process” moment and it worked perfectly.
Initially I wasn’t sure how the different colors would go but I think it represents the ocean perfectly and I love the added dimension the greens add in to the blues, it makes it all seem much warmer.
I chose a gorgeous Jos Proust bird print for the backing and love the vibe. The colours all blend so well but without being too matchy matchy. Inititally I was going to choose a pale backing but the depth of print really got me the minute I saw it.
When it came to quilting, simplicity was key. I stitched on both sides of the ditch for every single line and, while time consuming, I am happier knowing each seam is lovely and secure especially as so much is assembled on the bias.
Then it was off to my local Port Noarlunga Beach where I found lots of gorgeous doors, painted walls, lawn areas and then finally a stunning sunset over the ocean.
Speak soon,
Sarah xx
