I love my job. No really I do. I mean when you are a crafty girl then the chance to play with fabric every single day is pretty special. It is a lot of work but so rewarding because there are always finished products to be proud of. Since joining the Riley Blake blogging family I have worked with some pretty special ranges and honestly I never ever get tired of it. Okay that is a lie, sometimes when I am covered in loose threads and fabric dust and I am unpicking something for the hundredth time I wonder why I bother hahahaha but fortunately the feeling never lasts long!
I was recently sent a swatch book for the basics range Blossom, created by Christopher aka The Tattooed Quilter. I knew pretty much immediately I wanted to play. I am getting a bit over using solids at the moment and enjoying going back to my roots a bit in terms of playing with lots of pattern and colour. Plus I have a new quilt pattern I am trying to get my head around and I knew straight away this line would be my perfect starting point.
Choosing the next line to coordinate in was a no brainer. I have been a massive fan of Minki’s work for the longest time and have been dying to work with her latest line since I saw the very first sneak peek. I ordered a fat quarter bundle and eagerly waited for it to arrive. You guys I was NOT disappointed! It has everything I need to be happy from gorgeous florals, sweet features I can fussy cut and a gorgeous color range to boot. I mean how could you not fall in love with those little houses with bicycles parked out the front!
See what I mean – divine all the way down to that teeny tiny bunting!
I had already decided that I was going to use these collections to keep working on my next quilt pattern – Fussy Gussy. This has been in the works for a long time now and I have made quite a few. But I was having a mental block regarding how to write the pattern. It is a simple quilt in theory but requires extra thought to get it right. Good news is that I think I have it nailed now and I will start drafting for testers next week.
Fussy Gussy is all about fussy cut details and sweet fabric frames. I always love the finished product because it is fun, and can look amazing in most fabric lines and in most quilt sizes too. I will release it in lots of size options because it is proving to be such a versatile pattern to use.
To match in with the amazing colours in Minki’s line I selected Blossom in Apricot, Peony and Aqua for my fabric frames. The background and binding is Gray. Interestingly the Gray was a happy coincidence from me writing the wrong fabric code ( I mean to do white with metallic silver blossoms) but it ended up working perfectly with the quilt and keeping a really modern vibe going – enter a deep sigh of relief and yay!
It probably comes as no huge surprise that I opted for wavy quilting. I promise I wasn’t going to initially but I knew it would work perfectly with the style of quilt and keep things fun and playful. Plus the whole thing took under an hour to do which makes the impatient crafter in me super happy.
I made the baby size quilt for this post and it looks so sweet especially with the fun scrappy binding. It would be so lovely in a cot or as a play mat – sadly I don’t have a nursery anymore to decorate so I had to photograph on Abby’s bed. That said though it looks sweet anyway you look at it.
Couldn’t you just curl up right there and nap? I know I could! Sadly it is school pick up time here and mum duties are about to kick in with after school cricket practice so the whole nap idea is shelved for now. I cant believe how busy life is here these days – nothing quite prepares you for the exhaustion of keeping up with socially active and sporty teens, although I wouldn’t have it any other way. It is nice to look at quilts like this though and remember a simpler time filled with bedtime stories and early nights…..
And that is it from me for today. Behind the scenes I am so busy with the soon to be release of my updated Kaleidoscope pattern and the Lemon Squeezy Quiltalong – this week we are cutting our fabrics and I am loving chatting techniques and fabrics with my new friends. I am also trying to keep up with the #aussiequilter photo challenge which is being run on Instagram by Blossom Heart Quilts and Jane Pipke – I am loving finding all the talented makers in my local community and again chatting all things sewing.
Right out the door I bolt to grab snacks before cricket. Think I might even take my Kaleidoscope quilt to bind while I watch. Side note – never ever ever will you ever see me do a scallop border again. NEVER.

04/03/2020 at 12:04 pmThanks so much Sarah. Will I need more than 1/2 yard each of the apricot, peony & aqua to frame the squares? Also, will 2 yards of the gray for the background & the binding be sufficient? I’m pretty excited, as you can see, to have all my fabrics ready once you publish your pattern. Thanks so much for your time.

04/03/2020 at 3:00 pmBetsy, it looks like you are as obsessed with this pattern as I am! LOL You are lucky because you can get that material. I live in Florida and it is not available, but after searching and searching I’ve found ANNIE OF GREEN GABLES. I’ve been there and will use that for my village. All my material arrived today except for the apricot, peony and aqua… I can’t get that particular material, but similar. So it looks like you and I will be ready to run as soon as the pattern hits the scene! I feel so blessed that I found this wonderful talented Sarah!!! Have fun, Betsy.

09/03/2020 at 8:57 amFor the cot size the 1/2 yards will be more than enough Betsy. And yes you should get the top and binding out of 2 yards of grey too. You may even be able to make it slightly bigger!

01/03/2020 at 5:08 pmThank you so much Christine 🙂 When I release the pattern I will announce in its own blog post and in my Instagram and Facebook feed. I usually give a fair bit of notice before things are released so people know to look out for it. I am aiming this pattern for the end of March 🙂
