Introducing the Piccolo Beach Mat

https://piccolostudio.com.au/2018/08/28/introducing-the-piccolo-beach-mat/

My word I have a lot of photos to share today – that is what happens when you have fantastically talented women sewing your patterns of course. If you have been on my social media recently you would know I was lucky enough to be accepted to have a pattern placed in the latest issue of One Thimble, issue 20.  I have shared lots of pics on Instagram, Facebook and my group but the Sew Along had kept me too busy to update it all on my blog. Well tonight is the night friends!

The Piccolo Beach Mat is beginner friendly, a quick sew and fabulously versatile. As my pics will show you can use it at the beach, as a picnic blanket at the park or even as a play mat. There are 2 options available in the pattern (one plain and one quilted) and you can dress it up with beautiful trims or add extra practicality with the addition of a waterproof layer. We use the string method to create our large circle and, with some practice, you can be sewing them up in no time as gifts.

I made 3 mats for the pattern because I wanted to try some new styles, plus I had some wonderful fabrics to play with and they kept calling me.

This is the basic version of the mat which I created using a gorgeous striped cotton top and calico backing. How stunning is the trim too – I found it at Spotlight and believe it or not it is one of the cheaper options! I loved the feel of this mat and it suited my local beach perfectly. Side note: Check the tide times before you try to take pics – there was no walking down those stairs onto the sand lol. Luckily there is no bad angle to shoot from at Port Willunga.

When the lovely Bec Williams sent me her new fabric line Oceania to play with I knew automatically it needed to be my second beach mat – mermaids and narwhals play together in the loveliest scenes and tones. I used the large border print for the backing too which was perfect – it reminded me of a little ocean view through a ships window. This is the quilted version of the mat, edged in tassels and with a waterproof layer for practicality. The fabric range is new to Hawthorne Supply Co and can be purchased here.

I had to include one more shot of that gorgeous fabric so you could see it in all its glory. Wait until you see what else I am creating with it!

Now I haven’t written the blog post on this gorgeous fabric yet but it is coming I promise! It is a brand new collection from designer Creative Monsoon and coming to stores in October. How sweet are those animals, so much fun and perfect for a play mat! I went a bit rogue and made a patchwork top for the mat with binding instead of trim. More to come on this mat later, and lots more pics too of course!

Once I had written the pattern I sent it to my testers and, as always, my ladies did not disappoint!

Mat created and photographed by Lucy at Beetles, Bugs and Butterflies

Lucy was really clever and upcycled a vintage tablecloth and woolen blanket for her mat. I love the fluted look around the edges too and the fact that as it gets cold you have a lovely soft blanket to wrap your dear ones in for the ride home.

Mat created and photos taken by Carlie of the Fabric Mamma

Carlie opted for fun and vibrant colours for her mat. And if you look closely you will see 2 more patterns from One Thimble in that first pic – the Ringer Raglan and Saltwater Skirt. I love seeing handmade all together in one  pic especially when it is so made so well.

Janelle did an amazing job with her mat. She chose an absolutely stunning print and trim. I love seeing it set up as a play mat too, because it is padded it will create a lovely soft area for baby to lay.
