Some fabric ranges make your breath catch in your throat. A huge sigh is released and suddenly the creative brain springs into action. They become your muse, and as a jumble of ideas fall through your brain you suddenly realise it doesnt matter what you create, it will all be beautiful because there is no possible alternative.

This is exactly how I felt when Sugar Beach by Jennifer Paganelli landed on my doorstep. Not only does it feature the famous “loopy” print which sent all us Aussie girls crazy a few years ago (in three colours now less!), it also has a colour palette to die for – pinks, blues, greens and even a touch of yellow and orange in a range of patterns that only Jennifer can do so well. It truly was love at first sight.

My first step was to make a couple of apple pie cushions – I mean how could I resist! But deep down in my heart I knew it needed a special quilt pattern all of its own and so the Sugar Swirl quilt was born. It is beginner friendly, a quick sew and a great way to use up your stash, especially if you keep it stored by colour. Like most of my quilts it is throw size and measures 60″ x 60″ or 150 x 150cm. I love the practicality of this size.

You may see an older print in the mix too. I needed one more green print and opted for a beauty from an older collection of Jennifer’s – which only goes to show just how well her ranges go together no matter the year they were printed.

I chose to take all my photos at my local beach, the same place I photographed my Nostalgia quilt a few years ago. When you have such a beautiful place right on your doorstep then it makes life so easy. Even on a winters day she still turned on all her magic for me. I am lucky to live in this part of the world and so are my children.

I opted to quilt in a spiral pattern – I really wanted some movement and it worked with the quilt pattern perfectly. I am really happy with how it turned out and I will definitely do it again. There are many tutorials online but I used this one and think the instructions are lovely and clear.www.piccolostudio.com.au

I really really love the colour and patterns in this quilt. It is fun and will be a gorgeous addition to my home I can already tell.

One thing I am still not sure about is the binding but I think it will grow on me. I wanted to really frame the quilt but black is not a colour I would normally choose. Maybe if I made it again then I would opt for navy or linen but like anything that has a million possible options attached it isn’t always easy to know at the time. I would love to know your thoughts though on the black binding though, what do you think?

And now for some arty beach photos – I couldn’t resist! If the tide hadn’t of been rushing in and threatening to leave me stranded on my section of the beach I may never have left.www.piccolostudio.com.au

What a lucky girl I was to work with yet another stunning range, I really really really love my job in moments like this. I still have a wee bit of fabric left over and have a free pattern planned to share with you all so stay tuned!

Now it goes without saying that I expect you all to race out and by Sugar Beach by Jennifer Paganelli as quickly as possible. How could you resist having these beauties in your collection, I know I couldn’t. I desperately hope that the new owners of Free Spirit Fabrics reprint collections like this, I know the demand is always going to be there.
