Joanna’s Quilt – kokka dreamy

https://piccolostudio.com.au/2018/01/06/joannas-quilt-kokka-dreamy/

I wont lie, I have been waiting for a month to share this beauty with you guys. How lucky was I to have this set as my final custom quilt for 2017, after all it is not every day a quilter gets to work with the incredible kokka dreamy range, especially as it is extremely rare and highly sought after.

If you have existed in the handmade world as long as I have I am sure you can imagine the squeals of joy that came after reading a message from the lovely Nicole asking me to create her a special quilt for her daughter from this beautiful range, which she had been saving for many years. The squeals were even louder once it arrived and I had it in my hot little hands – those sweet little deer and bunnies peeking out from that beautiful floral made my heart sing. And yes I am an unashamed fabric tragic, that is one part of me that will never ever change.

But first I have to tell you all about Nicole because she is one lovely lady and a handmaiden herself. Now clearly she has an incredible eye for fabric and she makes the sweetest accessories under her label Elle David. If you are in the market for some pretties I highly recommend paying her a visit and saying hi. Here is a photo of her gorgeous Jo Jo showing her leather butterfly hair clip which I am all kinds of obsessed with. Nicole is an avid buyer of handmade, which I love because as you know I am passionate about supporting our industry.

Nicole ordered a double bed patchwork quilt, pillowcase and apple pie cushion for her set. We talked alot about patterns and both really loved the idea of sashed diamonds – which by the way were WAY harder than they look. The end result though was so worth the tears, because it suited the fabric perfectly. I hand drew and hand cut each and every one of those diamonds to ensure the images on the fabric were properly showcased. It is those extra details that I think make a piccolo quilt so special. I would rather spend twice the time on the small things knowing that in the end you can see the difference clearly.

The quilt was finished and ready to post around the time that I was emptying Hannah’s room to repaint so it looks very empty in there. Of course that lets the quilt shine all on its own and lets be honest it was going to steal the show anyway. Hannah is in a new room now, which is smaller, grey and well suited to her age. I will show you that in upcoming quilt posts I am sure. I wont lie – pulling that tree of the wall HURT!

After some discussion Nicole chose to have the quilt professionally quilted which is an option for all my custom quilts, and I am so glad she did. We chose a classic pattern that adds sweetness to the quilt and doesn’t detract from the simple style at all.

And then we had the accessories. You guys know how much I love apple pie cushions and making one in this range – brilliant! I could fussy cut to my hearts content. Even a simple pillowcase looks amazing because when fabric is this pretty you cant really do anything wrong.

Now I have to leave you with possibly my favourite photo I have ever taken! It is no secret I get frustrated with my photography, which is of course entirely my own fault and predominantly due to my own impatience but ever so often all things align and I get an amazing photo – like this one! I am absolutely adding this style shot to all my blog posts going forward.

I’m sure you can see why I was so excited to share this one now – so much pretty! I doubt I will ever be lucky enough to play with this unicorn range again so it was an absolute privilege and I remain so grateful to Nicole for trusting me with her precious collection.

This really is extra pretty fabric, and the designs you came up with bring out the beauty of it too. x

Thank you Kay – it was such a pretty make. Have to admit though I completely underestimated just how difficult getting those sashed diamonds to work would be lol. Completely worth it though as it kept everything so simple and sweet.
