The Prairie by Bec Williams Designs

Today I have the great pleasure of sharing my quilt made using the debut collection by Bec Williams Designs called The Prairie. Honestly it is just the sweetest and it comes with the most impressive back story. Bec has entirely self funded this collection and has worked hard to teach herself every single necessary skill required to be able to get a design from sketch to full scale fabric production including surface design. Such an impressive feat from a clearly talented emerging designer.

Three words guys – WHIMSY WHIMSY WHIMSY!

The prairie features a mix of gorgeous flowers, hand drawn baby animals in a soft color pallet of blue, pink, yellow and white. It is perfect nursery fabric (although don’t be fooled I have seem some stunning dresses for older girls in these designs)  so of course I had to make a pram blanket from it to show it all off!  The fabric Bec sent me was organic cotton sateen from Spoonflower (part of her test run before she started sourcing commercial printing options) and while it isn’t traditionally a fabric used for quilting it was lovely to work with. It doesn’t have any give at all so a lot of care needs to be taken when cutting if you want to get everything matched up but the end result and the feel is so worth it.

The collection features 6 prints, including a gorgeous border print. I opted not to use that one in my quilt as I wanted to really highlight the sweetness of the animals and the delicate ditsy wildflower print which is, if I am to be honest, my absolute fave. I would love to do an entire nursery just in this print alone – what a stunner it would be!

 

When working with sweet fabrics I really believe simplicity is key so I opted to stick with a simple design using 5″ squares. I kept the quilting to straight lines which I think brings in a slightly more modern approach to the quilt, plus if I am to be honest I prefer it to more traditional quilting methods.

 

It was a dreary day here in Adelaide when photos were ready to be taken so it was difficult to capture the pretty. However once it landed in Bec’s hands she managed some gorgeous photos of her own which will be used in a lookbook for the range.

I wish Bec every success in her fabric venture and seriously if you are a fabric house looking for a talented designer you should snap this hard working woman right up – you wont be disappointed!
