So this is a wee bit exciting! Today I have the pleasure of being part of the Turnabout Patchwork Book tour and sharing my make for you all.
Turnabout Patchwork is by fellow Australian Teresa Mairal Barreu (Sewn Up / Teresa Down Under) and it is a triumph. It is based on the premise of taking simple blocks and adding twists by way of simple slices and turns. All the blocks are so quick and easy to make and the end result, incredibly effective.
I looked through the options and quickly selected the Diamond Star block as my own – simple HST blocks are always my favourites to make because it is amazing what you can do with them. In this case because the block only required two fabrics I was even more intrigued as to the end result – I wasn’t let down that is for sure!
For my two fabrics I chose Nancy Zieman’s new posthumous range Afternoon Picnic (distributed by Riley Blake Designs) and a simple white solid. I have been dying to play with this fabric since I saw the makes from it so this was a perfect opportunity. I don’t usually cut beautiful large scale fabrics into small 3″ squares as a rule but there was definitely enough interest in the fabric to make it work as you can see from the first block made.
The interest in this block is certainly shown by making a few to see the pattern. I made 4 blocks and twisted them as directed to make this sweet cushion.
Look how pretty that is! I bound the cushion in a fabulous grey stripe from Down Grapevine Lane – it was the perfect combination, adding a small detail without stealing the show. I think all my quilts and make this year will have stripes in it somewhere – they are my favourite things after flowers!
Of course I headed straight into Abby’s room to photograph. She is possibly getting tired of the constant quilty invasion but when every project looks amazing in there, it is impossible to stop.
It is funny – my style has changed so much over the past few months that this doesn’t necessarily feel like my own work. But to be honest it was lovely to return to my roots with pastels and florals, I think the decision I have made for this year (apart from striping all the things!) is that I am not going to give myself a style, I am going to create according to my mood and see where it takes me. It may mean I don’t end up with the cohesive social media feed I am supposed to but I sense it will be a whole lot more fun!
This beautiful book Moonflute is one of my favourites from my childhood – the illustrations so divine and stuck to the book as plates rather than printed on the pages. It is nearly 40 years old yet still in amazing condition because I remember being so careful with it even as a tiny wee thing.
So there we have my very first make of the blog tour – and I say first because I have agreed to do 2 posts. I really did love this book that much.
If you would like to purchase your own copy of the book you can right here. I will be giving away a PDF copy myself so stay tuned for my final post in 2 days to see details of how to win your own.
Thank you so much for having me Teresa – I hope you like what I did with your wonderful block.
Sarah x

03/02/2019 at 8:12 amThis is absolutely gorgeous! I’m so jealous you have such a lovely room you can photograph quilts in. I hang mine on the wall in my sewing room for pictures because of the poor lighting in the bedroom. Plus, my cats will think the quilt is all for them. Great photographs!
sarah scott
04/02/2019 at 7:18 pmYes our cat is quick to claim my quilt projects especially as my sewing table is right by the heater. This room I take photos in belongs to my 17 year old daughter Abby. In the beginning when she said she wanted an all white room a wee part of my soul died but turns out it is the perfect backdrop for my quilts so win win lol!
