Indie’s room

Normally this is the time of night I would be sending out a cheery good night to the universe and climbing into my very loved bed but I just couldn’t let another day in February pass without sharing my latest custom quilt set which is flying home as we speak. So instead I have poured another cup of tea and am ready to share all the pretty with you guys.

{Quick side note: February already?? How does that happen!)

Last year I was contacted by the lovely Georgia to create a custom rag quilt for her daughter Indie. It didn’t take us long to decide to use the newly released Best of Sarah Jane fabric range by Michael Miller. It meant waiting for a couple of months for the fabric to arrive in Australia but when you know exactly what you want, the wait is always so worth it.

We chose the softest pastel prints in the range and even used the stunning border print throughout the quilt itself as squares. Georgia had chosen a rag quilt immediately and we chose a white back to keep everything soft and oh so pretty.

And as you can see I am photographing in a whole new big girl room! Hannah has been begging for a grey room for a while now and just before Christmas we moved her into Cooper’s room and gave it a big makeover. Fitting her into a room that is so much smaller was a bit of a challenge but we love the cosiness of it all and the grey really is stunning. It was also fun watching her choose what decor came with her and got to feature on her walls etc. It is a very different room to what she had previously but she loves it and really that is all that matters. Luckily this quilt fitted in so perfectly, looking like it was made to be there. We still have some undeniable Hannah quirks too like the pretty dollhouse filled with roblox characters and the giant pink unicorn head – I do love that she is so unmistakeably her.

I always talk about how much I love rag quilts and honestly the appeal never fades – so soft, so pretty and so snuggly. This was the perfect fabric for it too and I love that Indie will have so many things to look at on her bed within those fabric squares – mermaids, flowers, balloons, girls with dolls, even elephants! No one does whimsical childhood like Sarah Jane and it is why I always love creating with her ranges.

To add a lovely finish to my quilt I decided to bind it. I think I am one of the few people in the world who bind my rag quilts but I love the finish it gives. It adds a final polish.

After a lot of decision making Georgia and i decided to make Indie’s rag quilt in the On Parade border print – it was hard to choose between that and the sweet balloon print but I think we definitely went the right way. I wasted a fair bit of fabric making sure that the balloons were placed properly but again, so worth it. I used a gorgeous dusky pink velvet for her name – it added even more texture and a softness to the whole set. I am dying to make more of these name cushions actually, she is so sweet!

And of course we need to talk about that apple cushion!! Remember the kantha stitchalong blog post? I mentioned I hadn’t finished creating and this was the end result. Again I used the vintage velvet and added in leather and felt for the stalk and leaves. I love her and I think you can expect to see her in many piccolo photos from now on.

So many hours went into all that stitching but the resulting texture is purely divine.

It was a happy moment when Indie’s quilt was all folded up and ready to go home. All that delicious fluff and colour ready to be opened and loved by a new little owner is really the best feeling.

Now if you look at my home page you may see a new addition to the menu – the custom orders page. I field so many questions a week about my custom quilt process so I thought it was high time I wrote it all down for you to read. There is also new links in store to place a deposit on a quilt of your own. I have decided to do only a few this year while I work on so many other lovely piccolo things I have in the works. I can never stop customs though so i thought this was a great way to offer it in a way that works for everyone. If you need a quilt by a certain date you only ever have to email me and ask the question, I try my best to work hard for you all the time.

And now, my tea is drunk and bed is calling. Thank you for reading all of this with me – I hope the journey was worth it.

This is gorgeous. I have never tried a rag quilt, is there a tutorial you would recommend?

I have to admit to never having found a pattern or tutorial I liked so I made my own style up. A pattern/tutorial is on the cards for this year though Kay if you can wait. I think mine take way longer than most but I really prefer the final product as it all looks neater.
