Annika’s butterfly quilt

Spring is here – after a long wet winter I can’t tell you how amazing it is to finally feel sun on our faces again! And how great are open windows. Because summers here in Adelaide can be ridiculously hot this is always my favourite time of year for being outside and I always seem to have energy to burn as a result.

And even more excitingly it is totally fitting that on this beautiful spring day I share a quilt filled with delicate flowers and butterflies. After all nothing says spring more clearly to me. It was an absolute pleasure to design this quilt for Annika and her mum Belinda – I loved everything from the fabric we chose to the design we finally settled on. I have never made butterfly blocks before and man oh man I love them so much! So if you are in the market for a butterfly quilt then I am definitely your girl!

Belinda already had a pretty clear idea of the fabric she wanted in Annika’s quilt so it took only a small amount of tweaking to give her a mix of fabrics she was truly happy with. I loved the addition of the deers too, it added depth and a touch of fun to the pink and aqua pallet.

Belinda talked about butterflies having a special meaning for her so we incorporated that both with fabric print and also some specifically created butterfly blocks. This was the concept I sent her and I have to say that man she had to have a lot of faith in me because it seriously does not look like the finished product – insert all the laughing face and hand over eye emojis here.

So with this idea firmly in my head off I went – and the end result? Oh so pretty. I mean really really pretty. And Hannah’s room was the perfect setting for it as always.

For accessories Belinda chose a personalised pillow with gold lettering and coordinating apple pie. There was supposed to be a butterfly shaped cushion as well but it really didn’t turn out well, in fact I think we are both a little traumatised by that experience. I have promised her that as soon as I nail the new design she can expect one in the post.

So there we have it – another sweet quilt finished for 2017 with a few more following very closely behind. I truly loved every part of making this one and hope it is happy in its new home. Thank you so much Belinda, it was truly a pleasure.
